Pattern Remix Challenge: Prose & Poetry Cargo Joggers

Introducing a new take on an old competition… PATTERN REMIX CHALLENGE!

In the early years of Project Run and Play this was sometimes done monthly and sometimes used as a weekly theme during a season of competition. Of course we LOVE a good pattern hack so we thought we would start this off with a little friendly competition among ourselves! The PRP Facebook group chose our first pattern to remix…

PROSE & POETRY CARGO JOGGERS & SKIRT!

This is such a great pattern and we want YOU to be able to sew it as is or altered so it is on sale for just $5 this week! No code needed. Sale ends Sunday, May 11.

We both had so much fun hacking one of our most popular patterns, and we’re ready to show you! The winner will be decided by vote, so be sure to cast yours at the end of the post!

I loved sewing up one of my favorite patterns, and I cannot leave well-enough alone. By that, I mean, I usually don’t make a pattern without making some small hacks. But I knew it needed to be a more substantial hack for a HACKING challenge, so I combined a few of my favorite things: color-blocking, RTW inspiration, and those huge side pockets!

This uses a comfy French terry in charcoal grey and olive green. I cut the front and back pieces from my main fabric, removing 1.5 inches from the width, and then cut a 6″ wide strip for each side panel. If you do the math, that widened the pants a fair amount, to give it a super comfy, slouchy look. I placed one open pocket and one cargo pocket (both self-drafted) on the side panel, and couldn’t complete those pockets with some Shine Bright labels. I held my cargo pockets shut with bar tacks at the sides of the flap, instead of any other type of closure. My son has a pair of RTW cargo joggers with this feature, and I think it’s genius, because he can still get his hand in and out easily, without having to fasten anything. And I like that it lays flat without any corners popping up!

There’s a single front and back patch pocket, to give a little bit of asymmetry, and who doesn’t want more pockets? I also trimmed off some width from the inseam of the pants, and added a contrasting gusset. The shirt is a basic Lemon Tee, but I tied it all together with a little “tag” of matching fabric from the pants, on the sleeve. If you look closely, you’ll see the outfit styled with 2 different shoes. I sew for my kids, and love to make things that they love. Letting them in on the styling choices is another way to honor their preferences. Thank you for cheering us on!

I always love a good pattern hack, but Prose & Poetry was pretty tough since it has so many options already! After much deliberation, I came up with the idea of turning the Poetry cargo skirt pattern into an overall skirt- a skirtall! Well, that seemed fitting for one of my farm girl nieces and I went with the toddler. I don’t actually have her measurements (oops!) so I was guessing quite a bit. Thankfully, Prose goes all the way down to a size 1, and so does Lagoon!

I shortened the skirt pieces by an inch and extended the top upwards using the shape of the Jonagold Jumper, shortened at the top. I cut both pieces on the fold instead of creating separate pieces and sewed a faux flat felled seam. The hipline pockets used one layer stitched on top of the skirt and the back pockets are unchanged, but I added topstitching to look like rolling fields with some sheep hand embroidery. I moved a cargo pocket to the center of the front bodice. Oh, and of course I added a few Shine Bright labels! I sandwiched the straps on an angle between the back and lining, which took a bit of trial and error. The front was also lined and then the sides were sewn. Finally, I added more topstitching, a hem, and buttons for the front. I also sewed a Lagoon top with short sleeves and (Rain)Bows sized down for her little ponytails.

I would do a few things differently should I attempt this again. I might. It wasn’t hard, just a lot of topstitching. And how cute would this be in corduroy? Now I have more ideas…

Voting is open through Thursday at 8pm EST! And don’t forget to grab your copy of the pattern for JUST FIVE DOLLARS this week! It’s already packed with options, and now you have even more ideas to use it to make whatever you design!
