Season 28 – Week 4

The final round of Season 28 is here. It’s time for the designers to show us their Signature Style. This week it’s very important for you to make it to the end of the post and VOTE because the prizes will be awarded according to the results this week! This week’s theme is often the hardest challenge, because it’s not easy to edit your style down into one look. Let’s see what they made!

Before we get to their creations, here’s a reminder about how this competition works. Along with the public vote, and a panel of judges, 1/3 of the score will come from a Celebrity Judge. This week, Amelia of Mother Sews Best is stepping into that role. Her mission is to teach moms to sew, without wasting time or money! We’re excited to have her as our celebrity judge this week. This final round determines 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, so vote carefully!

Laura of Peony Patterns – Pretty in Pink

I was once told that you often can’t tell someone’s favorite color just by looking at them, unless their favorite color is pink.  Then you can always tell. I kinda think that must be true. Pink is always a color I gravitate towards.

For Project Run and Play I really wanted to draft original patterns as much as possible each week and this dress is something I have been wanting to draft for quite some time.

It starts with the side button placket detail. I’m such a sucker for pretty buttons. And then features a ladder back detail with sweet shoulder ties.  The skirt is a fun new technique I’ve been wanting to try. I love a very full skirt and this skirt has extra gathered panels inserted starting at the hip and wrapping around.  The insert also got a little extra feminine flare with a hem ruffle and gathered pouch pockets in the seam.

Shara of Handmade Nelly –Modernly Vintage

To be perfectly honest, this week’s theme was the hardest of them all for me! I love to sew a huge variety of styles, pieces, and fabric bases. So, for a little direction, I asked some family and friends what they thought was my signature style, and the most common answer was a church dress with embroidery for my youngest. But how to add a special Project Run and Play twist?! To do that, I decided to put a modern spin on a classic vintage look to come up with an outfit my daughter would be over the moon to wear to church!

I wanted to incorporate some of my very favorite design elements into my signature style look. I have always loved pinafores, so that was where I started building my outfit, with the Canterbury pattern from Little Lizard King as my base. I used a fun woven koala print that my daughter would be sure to love, shortened the skirt a bit so the under-dress would show a little more, and added pintucks with a cute pom-pom trim. I also added some patch pockets to sides of the skirt with hand-embroidered koalas of my own design.

And, since I can’t choose a favorite fabric base between knit and woven, I decided to go with a knit dress underneath the pinafore. I used the Nettle pattern from Peony Patterns because it has the cutest twist sleeves that would be a perfect detail under the pinafore. I chose to drop the bodice lining and do a neckband instead so it would be a little cooler for our upcoming summer months. I also had to add some inseam pockets because what 6-year-old doesn’t need pockets? For the fabric, I used a fun polka dot jersey from Raspberry Creek Fabrics that complemented the pom-pom trim on the pinafore. I love how my combination of a classic vintage style with modern elements and my favorite kinds of details helped capture my signature style! Alexe of Alfie – Cool Little Dude

For many many reasons, I kept my little boy for dessert 😊 !

I tend to be more inspired for my daughter, she’s been my muse for so long! But when I take pictures of her outfits, my son always wants to be part of it! This is why I think he deserves the spotlight too…

Also, we’ve been seeing a lot of girl outfits and for the big finale, I decided to take on the challenge and show that sewing for boys can be colorful, fun and impressive too! I am cheering for all the boy’s moms today  😛

Before starting, I had to really think about who I was as a sewist and ask myself, what’s my identity? What I used to love the most is sitting in the middle of my scrap box, choosing the wildest color combination and start colorblocking! From the tiniest piece of scrap, I used to make appliques and I kind of stopped because as you know, it takes a LOT of time! So I went back in time and did exactly that…I had SO MUCH FUN!  And who’s the happiest? My husband…because I did not spend a dime for this project! 😛

So this is it! I hope you love it and that you had as much fun following the competition as I competing!

Check my Instagram for more details 😊

Pattern inspiration: Vanille from Non Non Oui, Cargo pants from Lowland, Denim Jacket from Peek-a-boo and Sunshine Coast hat from Goober Pea Designs

Congratulations to all three of these designers, who designed and sewed so well! We hope you’ll share the love with them by giving them your vote! This week is the final week, and all places are determined from their looks this round.

This is how their scores are determined:

1/3 score = public voting
1/3 score = panel of judges
1/3 score = celebrity guest judge of the week

The results have been tallied and the winner of Week 3 is:

Alexe of Alfie – Girl Power

Here’s what the Monica, our celebrity guest judge, had to say about the look:

“Alexe, I thought your proposal was super fun. It reminds me of a lot of outfits I used to wear when I was little. The materials you used for the jacket are a real headache when it comes to sewing, I congratulate you because it is perfect and very well-matched. It’s a very nice detail to have added the fanny pack. I can’t stop complimenting your beautiful and motivated model who puts all her passion into the photo shoot.”

Congratulations, It’s a well deserved win!!

Only 3 designers can advance on to the next week.  This is our least favorite part of the competition. By scores tallied, we’re losing:

Elisabeth Breckley – Podium Perfection

Our sponsors have contributed so generously, so she will be going home with an amazing prize package. Plus, all the Season 28 designers are part of the Project Run & Play family, so she will have opportunities to share more here!

Thank you Monica for contributing as a guest judge this week. We appreciate your contribution so much! As a reminder, 1/3 of the score comes from a guest judge, 1/3 from the vote, and 1/3 from a panel of judges: AudreyWhitney, and Jenny, who participate all season.  Scoring is a big job, and it’s not easy. We love our judges!

Don’t forget our sponsors have prizes for our sew along winners too! You can participate! Check out the details, and get your creations in by April 28. See you next week for the Signature Style theme!
