Easy Woven Headband Tutorial

I have a fun tutorial for you today. Art Gallery has a collection of beautiful woven prints, Madamoiselle, and I wanted an easy headband that didn’t take any extra work than a quick knit headband. I think this is genius, and BONUS: there’s NO hand sewing! If it involves hand sewing, chances are I’m not going to do it. #trueconfessions.

I used our Sunshine Scrunchies and Rain(Bows) pattern for the bow portion.

For the headband you’ll need: 1/4y of woven fabric, and a scrap of cotton lycra knit.

You will need to measure around your child’s head to get the first measurement. Try to hold the tape taut, exactly where they will wear the headband. Take that measurement, plus 1/2,” and cut out a rectangle with that width, by 6″ tall. You will also need a piece of knit cut 1″ wide by 6″ tall.

This headband works with the medium sized bow from the Rain(Bows) pattern, so you’ll need those pieces as well.

Stitch the knit piece to one short end of your headband, right sides together, with 1/4″ seam allowance. On the other short end of the headband, fold the edge over 1/4″ and press. Press the seam on the knit side towards the headband as well.

Fold it in half, right sides together, and stitch down the long side, with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Turn it right side out, and press with the seam on the center back.

Now you’ll tuck the knit piece into the other side. Try to match it to the folded edge, so you’re inserting it about 1/4.” Edge stitch that, to secure it into a loop. This little sliver of knit will give you the stretch you need for the woven headband to fit, and we’re going to hide it with the bow!

Assemble the bow pieces as directed in the tutorial. Once you have those done, you can attach them together! It’s helpful to pleat the bow and headband, to get the center piece to fit better.

I like to use hot glue to attach the center. Put it in a few places, so that nothing slides around.

And you’re done! No hand sewing, and you can use those cute woven prints! I hope you give this tutorial a try the next time you have some woven scraps you want to show off.
