Description
From Season 22 of Project Run & Play we are happy to bring you Sarah of Waves and Wild’s Fireside Slippers pattern used for her Holiday Fashion look.
Pattern Features:
The Fireside slippers are a warm and cosy, boot-style slipper. There are two height options and the taller boot can be rolled down to show the lining. You can add a reinforced heel and additional ties. There are instructions to guide you through several sole choices. This pattern is suitable for enthusiastic beginners. Â There are so many options, and this pattern is definitely worth the effort it takes to make them! Â A new favorite.
Fabric Recommendations:
Main Fabric: Medium weight woven fabrics are best. Great choices include wool blends, tweed, corduroy, velvet, soft denim. Heavier, stable knit fabrics can also be used. Fabrics with some give to them will be easier to deal with when sewing the curves, especially around the heel.
Contrast Heel Fabric: (reinforced heel option only): Similar weight fabric to main fabric.
Interfacing: Depending on your fabric choice, you may wish to interface your heel fabric (reinforced heel option only).
Padding: 0.5cm – 1.5cm polyester wadding/batting. (Note: I recommend polyester as it is generally tougher/harder wearing than natural fabrics. Cotton/bamboo/wool batting could certainly be used if you prefer natural fabrics.) It is possible to go thicker with your batting (I have successfully made adult slippers with 3cm polyester batting). The thicker you go, the harder it is to sew, the cosier they feel and the comfier
they are. There are instructions on page 8 showing you my recommended method of cutting your batting and lining.
If you class yourself closer to beginner than intermediate you may find it easier to use thick fleece instead of batting. Your finished slipper will fit a little larger but the sewing process will be easier.
Lining: Medium/thick warm fabrics such as sherpa, teddy, short-pile fur/faux fur, thick fleece.
Sole: Unless you are making slippers for a non-walker you need to use something non-slip for your sole. Faux suede is a great option for beginners as it’s easy to sew (suede is also great but often a little harder to sew). There are many non-slip fabrics designed specifically for shoes/slippers. The easiest option is to use a sewable non-slip fabric. There are also instructions to guide you through applying a thicker, rubber sole to the bottom of your slippers to create a sturdier boot. If you wish to do this you will need contact cement/specialised shoe glue. If you are going to glue on a sole you can use your main fabric for the sole during the main construction. You will then glue the rubber sole to the fabric at the end.
