Description
From Sarah of Waves & Wild we are delighted to Bring you the Park Life Parka!
Pattern Features:
The Park Life is a comfortable and warm zip jacket with a nod to 90s Brit-pop styling!
The Park Life goes from Age 2 up to Age 12. It has a removable hood which attaches with snaps. The hood has a removable fur trim. Wadding is added to create shape and add insulation. There are options for welt pockets, zip pockets and patch pockets.
Fabric Recommendations:
Main Fabric: Most light/medium weight woven fabrics are suitable. Poplin is a surprisingly good choice – it’s easy to sew and being tightly woven it provides protection against light showers. Heavier woven cotton fabrics such as drill also work well. Lightweight babycord would be suitable but heavier corduroy would be too bulky. For greater water resistance, fabrics such as light oil skin or ripstop are ideal but can be trickier to work with. In the cover photo the yellow coat is light oil skin. On the inspiration page the dark blue jacket with white fur is cotton poplin.
Lining: Thin polyester lining fabric or similar is required. If you prefer natural fabrics then silk would be a great alternative although it is obviously more expensive! Cotton poplin could also be used for the lining. Thin fleece could be used as a warmer option for lining the hood but isn’t recommended for the whole coat.
Notions:
Ribbing: A maximum of 14cm/5 ½” chunky ribbing with excellent stretch and return is required. See page 7 for exact measurements. If using tubular ribbing you may need extra.
Wadding/Batting: Go thicker (up to 2.5cm/1”) for a warmer coat (if you have a suitable sewing machine), or thinner (down to 5mm/¼”) for a lighter (and easier to sew) coat. Polyester wadding is generally more durable. See page 10 for more information about wadding choices.
Zips: An open, chunky zip (tooth size approximately 6mm/¼”) is required for the front. A closed, regular sized zip (tooth size approximately 3mm/⅛”) is required for each zip pocket.
NOTES ON ZIP LENGTH
For the front zip: If you are unable to get othe exact zip length listed for your size go with the closest but shorter. If your zip is a little short you can just leave a little more space below your zip. If you have to use a larger size zip then line up the bottom and cut away excess from the top BUT make sure to sew your zip
down before moving the zip pull otherwise you risk the zip pull coming off! For the pocket zip: If you are unable to get the size required then get a longer zip. You can create a new
zip stop at the correct point by sewing a couple of stitches over the zip teeth. Cut away the excess tape and teeth and use as instructed.
Snaps: 10 – 15mm (⅜” – ⅝”) snaps suitable for outerwear. You will need 10 snaps for ages 2-8, and 14 snaps for ages 9-12.
Hook and Loop Tape (Velcro): The amount required depends on the number of pockets. You will need a maximum of 15cm (6”). I recommend 20mm (¾”) wide tape but larger tape can be easily trimmed to size as required.
Interfacing: You will need a maximum of 40cm (½ yard) medium weight fusible interfacing.
Hood Trim: You will need a maximum of 17cm (7”) faux fur. Long pile fur looks best but is more challenging to sew than short pile.
Optional: 10cm (4”) drawstring cord or grosgrain ribbon to create a hanging loop
Sizes:
2-12
